Supreme Court Orders MEA to Publicize Compensation for Indian Families in Russia-Ukraine War
The Supreme Court of India has stepped in to address a critical gap in government outreach to families of Indian nationals who died serving in the Russian armed forces during the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In Divya & Ors. v. Union of India, a bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi directed the Ministry of External Affairs to issue a public notice inviting compensation claims from families of 51 reported deaths.
Despite 51 Indians being killed while fighting for Russia, only six families had approached authorities seeking compensation. This gap revealed that most affected families either did not know compensation was available, did not understand the process, or lacked resources to navigate it alone. The Supreme Court's intervention addresses this disparity directly.
